Ambassador Bela Szombati11/27/09 - American Hungarian Federation and others express their concern about sweeping statements made by Ambassador in interview concerning Hungary. The Washington Times publishes Federation's letter and former Foreign Service Officer pens letter to the Ambassador. "[The Ambassador is] ignoring an exceedingly complex social problem that not even the government has been able to address effectively. AHF9/26/2009 - AHF holds its more than 100 years of service celebration... On Saturday, September 26, 2009, the American Hungarian Federation (AHF) celebrated its more than 100 years of service to the Hungarian American community with a magnificent Gala Ball at the Hungarian American Athletic Club in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  A capacity crowd of over 250 people from all walks of life, listened to heartrending patriotic recitals, and beautiful renditions of the American, Hungarian and Transylvanian (Szekely) national anthems. A unique collection of Hungarian songs and poems were played throughout the evening. The theme of these wonderful pieces and the evening was, “the future will only be beautiful, if the Magyar nation unites”. Moving congratulatory letters from former Prime Minister Viktor Orban (read here), and from former Foreign Minister and Ambassador to the U.S., Geza Jeszenszky (read here), were read, among others. Six awards for lifetime contributions to the Hungarian and American Hungarian communities were given, including long overdue recognition of Gabor Bodnar, a legend in worldwide Hungarian scouting.  Read the press release in English. Washington, DC – On Wednesday, August 26, the Central and East European Coalition (CEEC), an assembly of 18 ethnic organizations representing the communities of Central and East European descent, met with Obama Administration foreign policy officials. AHF Delivers Letter to President Obama... in response to Hungarian Foreign Minister's suggestion to Secretary Clinton to invite Hungary’s Prime Minister Bajnai to Washington. The Federation believes, with general elections scheduled to be held in less than a year, that such an invitation might be premature and not serve U.S. interests in Hungary.6/30/2009 - Federation supports Hungarian Prime Minister visit after general elections and formation of new government... AHF Delivers Letter to President Obama... the Federation believes that an invitation to Mr. Bajnai at this time would be ill-advised and would not serve the best interests of either country – as would such a visit scheduled at a more appropriate time. The American Hungarian Federation urges the Rumanian government to adopt policies that end discrimination along ethnic lines, take steps to increase local autonomy, and strengthen inter-ethnic relations. How Hungary Shrank: Ostensibly in the name of national self-determination, the Treaty dismembered the thousand-year-old Kingdom of Hungary, a self-contained, geographically and economically coherent and durable formation in the Carpathian Basin and boasting the longest lasting historical borders in Europe. It was imposed on Hungary without any negotiation by vengeful leaders who were ignorant or ignored the region’s history, and mercilessly tore that country apart. By drawing artificial borders in gross violation of the ethnic principle, it also transferred over three million indigenous ethnic Hungarians and over 70% of the country's territory to foreign rule.6/4/2009 - The 89th Anniversary of Hungary's Dismemberment... The statement reads, "Trianon is not a relic of the past to be ignored.  As several recent publications astutely suggest, Trianon, as part of a blunder of a massive scale, had far-reaching consequences that are still with us today and continue to affect both the lives of the Hungarian historical communities found in states neighboring Hungary and the region." "Global Unity:" Hungarian Reformed Churches Unite5/22/2009 - Globális egyesülés – A Kárpát-medencei egység után jövőre megalakul a Református Világközösség / "Global Unity:" Hungarian Reformed Churches Unite... On May 22, 2009 the Reformed Churches in the Carpathian Basin expressed their unity by accepting a common constitution. This is an tremendously symbolic action uniting Hungarian communities throughout the Carpathian Basin for the first time since Trianon. On a related note, the Budapest – Pannonhalma Magtár Művészeti Alapítvány is publishing a new leather-bound edition of the Vizsoly Bible with an accompanying DVD. [read more]

Col. Ferenc Koszorus, posthumously promoted to the rank of General by Prime Minister Antall after the fall of Communism, who volunteered his services and mobilized the 1st Armored Division under his command to militarily intervene on July 5, 1944 to stop Laszlo Baky, a secretary of state in the Ministry of Interior for “Jewish Affairs," from deporting the approximately 200,000 plus Jews from Budapest.The Federation believes it would be appropriate that the Embassy of Hungary, as a representative of all Hungarians, expand such exhibits to include Hungarian heroes of the Holocaust.3/24/2009 - As part of the Holocaust Memorial Month, the Embassy of Hungary is sponsoring the Carl Lutz and the Legendary Glass House in Budapest traveling exhibit in Washington, DC. The Carl Lutz Foundation, Hungarian American Coalition, Lantos Foundation for Human Rights and Justice, Mensch International Foundation and the Embassies of Switzerland and Israel are co-sponsors. On February 3, the Embassies of Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Malta and South Korea hosted a reception at the Hart Senate Office Building to celebrate the enlargement of the Visa Waiver Program (“VWP”).  The ambassadors of each country, including Hungarian Ambassador Ferenc Somogyi, greeted the guests.
